Update on $5 insurance policy surcharge to fund fire and police pensions

In March of 2013 the Minnesota House of Representatives and Senate passed versions of the Omnibus Tax Bill. In the end the shortage in pension plan will be paid from the state's General Fund instead of the proposed $5 surcharge. The surcharge was slated to be added to any fire insurance or auto insurance policy in the state.

What Deductible Should I Choose?

Fire insurance quotes can vary widely between companies and a lot may have to do with which deductible the agent choose. Remember that homeowners insurance is not designed for the small claims like something under $1000 so it is common to have a deductible at least $1000 or more. The higher the deductible the lower the premium will be but try to get a deductible you can afford if something does happen.

Stay away from percentage deductibles unless you can afford a very high deductible. A percentage deductible in Minnesota may be something like 1% or 2% of the dwelling coverage. This means that a home with $400,000 in dwelling coverage with a 1% deductible would have the homeowner coming up with $4000 before any work is done to fix the home. With a high deductible like that many homeowners may not be able to afford a major loss.

When is the best time to shop for fire insurance?

The obvious answer is not when your house is on fire! Sorry but I couldn't give up the chance to make a joke. In all seriousness fire insurance is something that can change each year and as companies compete for your business it is likely you will find a much lower rate elsewhere. The best thing you can do is compare rates each year to determine if it makes sense to switch companies. Always try to compare similar coverage if possible and give the competition the ability to offer as many discounts as possible.

What I mean by allowing them to offer you discounts is that many fire home insurance quotes are designed to get you in the door with discounts. Some companies offer a new customer discount while others may give you multiple policy discounts. The more you seem interested in their quote the harder they will work to find all possible discounts you deserve.
